India’s Maritime Sector Poised for Global Leadership, Says PM Modi at Global Maritime CEO Forum

New Delhi | October 29, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday highlighted India’s rapidly advancing maritime sector, describing it as one of the strongest pillars of the nation’s growth and a key driver of its economic transformation.

Speaking at the Global Maritime CEO Forum, the flagship event of India Maritime Week 2025, the Prime Minister said India is emerging as a trusted maritime partner and a beacon of stability amid global uncertainty.

“India’s maritime sector is in a very strong position and moving ahead very fast. When global seas are rough, the world looks for a steady lighthouse — and India can become that steady lighthouse,” Modi said.

India Showcased as a Reliable Trade Partner

PM Modi noted that the forum has evolved into a truly global platform, with participation from over 85 nations, reflecting India’s growing influence in global maritime affairs.

“This summit has become a global event. The participation of more than 85 nations sends a strong message to the world,” he said, adding that “the synergy and energy of India’s maritime sector have strengthened because of this summit.”

Highlighting the sector’s transformation over the past decade, the Prime Minister said India’s ports and maritime infrastructure have seen remarkable improvements, helping the country strengthen its position in global trade.

“The maritime sector is driving India’s growth. Over the last decade, it has transformed significantly, boosting trade and port infrastructure,” he said.

Reforms and Modernisation of the Maritime Ecosystem

PM Modi emphasised that his government has undertaken “next-generation reforms” to modernise the sector, replace outdated colonial-era laws, and create a forward-looking legal and policy framework.

“We have replaced over a century-old colonial shipping laws with modern, futuristic laws suited for the 21st century,” he said.

He further added that India’s ports now rank among the most efficient in the developing world and, in several aspects, even outperform those in advanced economies.

A Global Platform for Maritime Transformation

The Global Maritime CEO Forum brought together top global maritime CEOs, investors, policymakers, innovators, and international partners to chart the future of the global maritime ecosystem. The forum serves as a key platform for dialogue on sustainable maritime growth, resilient supply chains, green shipping, and strategies for an inclusive blue economy.

PM Modi’s participation underscored his government’s commitment to an ambitious, future-focused transformation under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 — a long-term strategy anchored on four core pillars:

  1. Port-led development

  2. Shipping and shipbuilding

  3. Seamless logistics

  4. Maritime skill development
