Met Eireann has warned of heavy rain in Northern Ireland on Saturday night and Sunday morning, with the risk of local flooding and difficult travel conditions.Speaking of travel conditions, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) has warned road users, especially in areas affected by the orange warning, to check local traffic and weather conditions before commencing their journey.
The RSA has issued the following advice to motorists following this weekend's adverse weather conditions.
- Drivers should slow down and allow more braking distance between themselves and the vehicle in front in rainy weather. This is especially important on high-speed roads such as dual carriageways and motorways, where the risk of aquaplaning is high.
- Be especially careful when driving behind freight vehicles, as they emit a significant amount of spray that reduces your visibility. Move back where you can see their mirrors.
- If the road ahead is flooded, take an alternate route and do not attempt to drive through it. Flooded roads that appear shallow may be deeper than you think. Embankments may have collapsed, and there may be trees or branches that are not visible.
- Road users should always follow recommended routes and obey traffic restriction signs erected by the local council or An Garda Síochána.
- After driving through water, drive slowly for a short distance with your foot on the brake pedal - this helps dry the brakes.
- Always drive with dipped headlights.
