Lucknow, Oct. 11 (PTI) — The family of Hariom Valmiki, the Dalit man beaten to death by a mob in Rae Bareli after being mistakenly identified as a thief, met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday, an official statement confirmed.
Valmiki, a native of Fatehpur district, was attacked by a mob in the Unchahar area of Rae Bareli on October 2. Police have so far arrested 12 individuals in connection with the incident.
According to the statement, Valmiki’s wife Sangeeta Valmiki, accompanied by her father Chhote Lal and daughter Ananya, met the Chief Minister along with Manoj Pandey, the MLA from Unchahar. CM Adityanath expressed his condolences and assured the family of the state government’s support.
After the meeting, Sangeeta Valmiki said:
“Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has supported us at every level. I am grateful to him. Baba is the only one who can protect Dalits. We are fully satisfied with the government’s actions and confident that justice will be served.”
The Chief Minister announced that the family would receive housing under the Chief Minister’s Housing Scheme. Sangeeta Valmiki is also to be provided a permanent job, and the family will be covered under all relevant government welfare schemes.
CM Adityanath highlighted that the accused were arrested within 24 hours of the incident and reaffirmed that the safety and dignity of Dalits and marginalized communities remains a top priority. He added that the state government would pursue the case rigorously in court to ensure the strictest punishment for the perpetrators.
Earlier on Saturday, Rakesh Sachan, Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Khadi, Handloom and Textiles, and Asim Arun, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Social Welfare, had also met the bereaved family and assured them of justice.
Congress Alleges Obstruction in Condolence Visit
Meanwhile, the Congress party claimed that its state president was prevented from visiting the victim’s family. According to the party, Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president and former minister Ajay Rai was on his way to the Valmiki residence in Fatehpur to offer condolences and financial assistance on behalf of the party, but was stopped by police.
The statement said Rai staged a dharna on the road along with several party leaders, including former minister Naseemuddin Siddiqui and Sitapur MP Rakesh Rathore. The police subsequently transported all the leaders and workers present to the police line by bus.
The Congress claimed that the party has supported the Valmiki family since the first day of the incident. Members were reportedly present at the hospital following the attack and remained at the scene until the post-mortem was conducted.
