Chennai: Tamil Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader and actor-politician Vijay is expected to meet the families of the 41 victims who lost their lives in the Karur stampede on October 27 in Chennai, according to sources cited by CNN-News18.
“Our leader wants to hold a meaningful and personal interaction with the victims’ families and may spend five to six hours with them. Chennai offers a more secure and controlled environment, and we are in the final stages of finalising the venue,” a senior TVK source said.
The tragic incident occurred on September 27 during a TVK public meeting in Karur addressed by Vijay. The stampede claimed 41 lives after tens of thousands of supporters turned up—far exceeding the permitted crowd limit of 10,000. Vijay reportedly arrived nearly six hours late, and as he began his speech, the restless crowd surged towards the stage, breaking barricades and triggering the deadly chaos.
TVK insiders revealed that organising the meeting in Karur had proved to be a “Herculean task.”
“We explored multiple venues in Karur, but none were approved. The one suggested by local police lacked basic safety features—it had no compound wall and resembled a warehouse. It could not have accommodated the attendees safely, so we had to reject it,” a source explained.
Except for one family, all others have agreed to meet the leader in Chennai, the source added.
The party has faced criticism for the delay in Vijay’s visit to Karur. However, TVK clarified that every attempt to finalise a venue in the district had been thwarted at the last minute. “Each time we confirmed a location, it was cancelled within hours, leaving us with no choice but to look beyond Karur,” a senior functionary said.
TVK had temporarily suspended its statewide yatra following the tragedy. Party sources indicate that Vijay will determine the next course of action for both the party and the affected families after the October 27 meeting.
All eyes are now on Vijay and his upcoming decisions, which are expected to shape the trajectory of Tamil Vettri Kazhagam’s strategy ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
