Vijay Seeks Permission to Visit Karur, Moves Supreme Court for Independent Probe into Stampede Tragedy

Chennai: Hours after actor-turned-politician Vijay reached out to the families of the Karur stampede victims through WhatsApp video calls, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief has now formally sought permission to visit Karur in person.

In an email addressed to the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP), Vijay expressed his desire to personally convey his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy. On Tuesday, the TVK leader had interacted virtually with the bereaved families, assuring them of his continued support.

Vijay has faced criticism from certain quarters for not visiting the affected families in person. During his virtual interaction, he was seen consoling a grieving mother, telling her emotionally, “I am like your son.”

Earlier reports quoting sources told PTI that it remained uncertain whether Vijay would travel to Karur. However, subsequent updates indicated that he had instructed TVK party members to reach out and provide assistance to the affected families.

The stampede, which occurred on September 27 during Vijay’s political rally in Karur, claimed 41 lives and left more than 60 injured. Police investigations revealed that the event drew an unexpected crowd of over 27,000 people, nearly three times the anticipated turnout. Authorities also cited a seven-hour delay in Vijay’s arrival at the venue as a contributing factor to the chaos.

On October 3, the Madras High Court constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident in detail.

Vijay Moves Supreme Court

In a new development, Vijay has approached the Supreme Court, seeking an independent probe into the Karur tragedy under the supervision of a former Supreme Court judge.

The petition, filed through advocates Dixita Gohil, Pranjal Agarwal, and Yash S Vijay, challenges the Madras High Court’s October 3 order establishing an SIT for the investigation.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the matter on October 10, when it will also consider a separate plea filed by BJP leader Uma Anandan, who has demanded a CBI inquiry into the stampede. The case will be heard by a bench comprising Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran.
