India’s major airports will soon be equipped with advanced anti-drone systems to counter potential threats posed by rogue unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), News18 has learnt. The decision follows heightened global military tensions and the increasing use of drones in modern conflict scenarios, including Operation Sindoor, which demonstrated their effectiveness in new-age warfare.
This marks the first instance of civilian airports in India implementing such security systems. According to senior government officials, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is spearheading the initiative. A specialised committee established by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) — with representation from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and other key stakeholders — is currently finalising the technical specifications.
“The specifications are under active consideration. Once finalised, procurement will begin,” a senior MHA official told News18.
The rollout will be executed in multiple phases. The initial phase will prioritise high-sensitivity airports such as Delhi, Mumbai, Srinagar, and Jammu, with the systems later expanded to other airports across the country.
“Once the specifications are approved, airport operators will be instructed to install solutions that meet the defined standards. Existing international models are also being studied to ensure effectiveness,” another official added.
The move comes in the backdrop of escalating tensions following the April 2025 terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam. Subsequent military action showcased India’s ability to neutralise terrorist infrastructure across the border without ground incursions. At the same time, multiple Pakistani drones were detected over Indian airspace, several of which were intercepted by Indian defence systems.
Officials note that these developments have underscored the urgent need to protect civil aviation hubs, particularly those near international borders, from potential drone-based threats.
