Ticket Row Sparks Turmoil in Bihar Congress

On Thursday, November 20, internal tensions within the Congress party escalated sharply as supporters gathered at the Sadakat Ashram in Patna, protesting the distribution of tickets for the Bihar Assembly elections.

Party workers demanded clear answers, not excuses. The situation had become chaotic, prompting Purnea MP Pappu Yadav to intervene personally. He sat with the protestors on the ground, attempting to calm tempers and facilitate dialogue.

Congress Erupts in Patna Over Ticket Allocation

The anger among workers was intense, with many openly expressing frustration. Though the Congress secured only six seats as part of the Mahagathbandhan alliance, party members blamed senior leaders for backing the wrong candidates.

Chants of “Ticket thieves, give up your seats!” echoed through the protest. State Congress president Rajesh Ram, in-charge Krishna Allavaru, Pappu Yadav, and Akhilesh Singh were among the leaders named by agitators.

Workers Blame Leadership for Poor Poll Performance

One protestor captured the mood succinctly: “Tickets were given to the wrong candidates. That is why we stand weakened today.”
The crowd grew increasingly hostile, alleging favoritism and even the selling of tickets. Many demanded that senior leaders step down.

In an attempt to restore order, the party issued notices to 43 leaders, including former ministers, MLAs, and district committee heads, warning them against damaging the party’s unity or public image. Non-compliance, the notice stated, could result in suspension for up to six years.

The list of those warned included prominent names such as Afaque Alam, Anand Madhav, Chhatrapati Yadav, Veena Shahi, Dr. Ajay Kumar Singh, and Kanchana Kumari. The message was unequivocal: indiscipline will not be tolerated.

A Deeper Crisis for Congress in Bihar

Political analysts view these protests as a sign of deeper organisational issues simmering at the grassroots level. The growing discontent poses a significant challenge for the Congress as it attempts to regroup ahead of future elections.

Pappu Yadav’s decision to sit with the protesters was seen as a timely attempt at damage control. However, rebuilding trust, bringing workers back on the same page, and implementing structural changes will require sustained effort.

For the Congress in Bihar, navigating a difficult political landscape and regaining credibility with both party workers and voters will be an uphill task. The road ahead is anything but easy.
