A shocking case of deception has emerged from Bihar, where a man who failed the Sub-Inspector (SI) recruitment exam allegedly pretended to be a police officer for years—deceiving not only the public but even his own family and wife.
According to police, the accused returned home years ago claiming he had successfully cleared the SI exam, leading his family to celebrate his “achievement” with great fanfare. Delighted at having a Sub-Inspector as a son-in-law, his in-laws also arranged an extravagant wedding. After the marriage, his wife accompanied him to his supposed posting district, where she cooked for him every morning before he left “for duty.”
For five years, the truth went undetected. The man maintained the charade by living in different locations in Purnia and Katihar, making it appear as if he had been posted across districts. His wife and parents never suspected anything—until recently, when they learned that he had never been appointed to the police force.
The Arrest
The case came to light in the Nagar Police Station area of Araria district. Police arrested the impersonator near the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP) while he was appearing on behalf of a woman complainant—claiming to be a police Sub-Inspector.
According to reports, he had been promising postings in various police stations in Purnia, Katihar, and Araria, allegedly collecting large sums of money from people in rural areas over the last three years.
On the day of his arrest, he had gone to the SP’s office representing a woman from the Bausi Police Station area. His behaviour, however, raised suspicion among officers, who felt his conduct did not align with that of a trained police officer. They alerted City Police Station SHO Manish Kumar Rajak, who detained him immediately after he left the premises.
Interrogation Reveals the Truth
During questioning, the accused initially identified himself as Ranveer Kumar, claiming to be posted at the Palasi Police Station in Araria. However, when officers asked him basic questions about senior officials and standard police procedures, he failed to respond.
He was taken into custody, and a fake pistol and a counterfeit police uniform were seized from him.
Further interrogation revealed his true identity:
Ranveer Kumar, 32, son of Arjun Paswan, a resident of Sakindudhail village under Singheshwar Police Station in Madhepura district.
He admitted that he had appeared for the SI exam in 2018 but failed. Fearing humiliation, he fabricated a story about clearing the exam and securing a police posting. To maintain the deception, he lived away from home for years, pretending to be posted at various locations.
A Five-Year Lie
Ranveer had been living with his wife and four-year-old son in Goriari, Forbesganj, Araria district. For five years after marriage, he meticulously pretended to be a Sub-Inspector—leaving home at fixed times and returning as if from duty.
When his wife finally learned the truth, she was devastated. His parents, however, reportedly still refuse to accept his arrest, insisting their son is a legitimate police officer and questioning how authorities could detain “an SI”.
City Police Station officials confirmed that a fake pistol and an unauthorised police uniform were recovered from him.
He now faces multiple charges, including impersonation, fraud, and misuse of official uniform. A case has been registered, and he has been remanded to judicial custody.
