Mamata Banerjee Launches Nationwide Yatra Against SIR, Predicts BJP’s Defeat in 2029

Kolkata:  West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday declared that the BJP is set to lose the upcoming state assembly elections, while announcing plans to launch a nationwide yatra in protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Addressing a public rally in Bongaon, North 24 Parganas, the Trinamool Congress chief predicted that the BJP would also be voted out of power at the Centre in 2029.
“If they hurt me, I will show what I can do. I will shake things up. After the elections, I will travel across India,” she said, asserting her political resolve.
“Bangla has the strength — Bangla will capture power in Delhi,” Banerjee added.

The Chief Minister accused the Election Commission of functioning like the “BJP’s commission” and urged genuine voters not to be intimidated by the SIR exercise. She reiterated that she would not allow legitimate citizens to be excluded from the rolls.

Claiming that 35 people have died due to the EC’s drive to “purify” voter lists, Banerjee criticised the SIR process as “unplanned” and deeply flawed.
“For so many years, they did not carry out SIR. Now they want you to declare that you were Bangladeshi and wish to become Indian — what happens then? Don’t be afraid. As long as I am here, no one will be able to remove you. This land is not afraid of the BJP,” she said.

Banerjee also held the BJP-led central government responsible for illegal infiltration, stating that agencies such as the BSF, CISF, and passport authorities fall under the Centre’s jurisdiction.
“In border areas, the BSF threatens people. If infiltrators are entering, who controls the borders? Who manages the airports and passports? The Central Government. So how are we responsible?” she asked.

Responding to Banerjee’s remarks, BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari accused her of resorting to threats and “fear politics.”
“Mamata Banerjee says, ‘If you strike me, I will jolt the entire country.’ After Rahul Gandhi talks of fighting the Indian state, Mamata Banerjee warns of anarchy if she loses power. She is desperate because ‘ghuspaithiya’ illegal infiltrators are being identified and removed under SIR,” Bhandari wrote on X.
