The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have uncovered a significant underground tunnel system used by Hamas in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. The extensive network, which runs beneath residential areas, a UNRWA compound, and several mosques, is believed to span approximately 7 kilometres in length, reach a depth of 25 meters, and contain around 80 rooms.
IDF officials say there is strong suspicion that the remains of Lt. Hadar Goldin, who was killed during the 2014 Gaza war, may have been concealed within this tunnel network.
According to the military, the underground complex served as a strategic hub for Hamas commanders, who used it to store weapons, plan operations, and coordinate attacks. Among the rooms identified were several believed to have been used by senior Hamas leaders, including Mohammad Shabana, who was killed in May alongside Hamas leader Mohammad Sinwar.
The tunnel was located during a joint operation conducted by the Yahalom Combat Engineering Unit and the Shayetet 13 Naval Commando Unit, both of which specialise in complex and high-risk underground warfare operations.
The discovery adds to growing evidence of Hamas’s extensive subterranean infrastructure, used to shield leadership figures and facilitate military activities beneath densely populated civilian zones.
