The Government is preparing to introduce a new law that could put an end to automatic broadband, mobile, and TV price hikes, giving consumers the power to cancel contracts if service providers increase charges.
Communications Minister Patrick O’Donovan is set to present the legislation to the Cabinet. The proposed law aims to curb the widely criticised “in-contract consumer price index” (ICPI) increases that major providers — including Eir, Vodafone, and Three — impose annually as part of standard 12-month or 24-month contracts.
Under current terms, Vodafone raises mobile plan prices by €2.50 to €3.50 every April, while fixed-line customers face yearly increases of €3.50 or €4.50, embedded into their agreements.
Meanwhile, in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee intensified her attack on the BJP and the Election Commission during a rally against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Reassuring genuine voters, she alleged that the SIR process was being conducted in an arbitrary and intimidating manner.
“Don’t be afraid if you are a genuine voter,” she said, claiming that officials were pressuring people into declaring themselves as Bangladeshi before reapplying as Indian citizens. She vowed, “As long as the TMC is here, we will not allow them to touch you.”
Banerjee also accused the BJP-led Central government of failing to prevent illegal infiltration, arguing that border and immigration control lie entirely under central agencies such as the BSF and CISF.
“In border areas, the BSF threatens people,” she alleged. “If illegal infiltrators are entering, who is responsible for guarding the border, the airports, and issuing passports? It is the Central Government. How are we to blame?” she asked.
Her remarks drew a sharp response from BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari, who described Banerjee as “desperate” amid the ongoing SIR exercise.
Quoting her warning, he wrote on X: “If you strike me, I will jolt the entire country.” He added that the TMC chief was “threatening anarchy” as “illegal infiltrators are being identified and removed through SIR.”
