Karachi, November 11: Pakistan is confronting what may be the worst social and economic collapse in its history, warned Syed Jabbar Abbas, Secretary General of the country’s leading humanitarian organisation, JDC Foundation.
Speaking about the escalating crisis, Abbas said that runaway unemployment, inflation, and poverty are pushing the nation toward unprecedented instability. Highlighting the grim reality faced by educated youth in Karachi, he described both the education system and the economy as having failed an entire generation.
“Students spend nearly two million Pakistani rupees on higher education,” Abbas said, “but after graduation, they either remain unemployed or are forced to accept jobs paying the equivalent of INR 6,500–7,500 per month.”
Expressing anguish over the growing despair among the youth, he remarked,
“When a young man studies for years and ends up earning a salary that cannot even cover fuel for his motorcycle, how can he live with dignity? What kind of future are we offering them?”
Abbas sharply criticised the government’s failure to provide economic relief, warning that the crisis is driving ordinary citizens to the brink of mental distress, crime, and suicidal thoughts.
“Every second young person who visits hospitals today is suffering due to unemployment and hopelessness,” he noted. Families earning between PKR 18,000 and 28,000 a month are now struggling to pay electricity bills running into tens of thousands, he said. “The middle class has been buried under economic pressure.”
He added that people are being forced to sell their jewellery and wedding savings just to afford school fees and utility payments. “If this situation continues,” Abbas warned, “people will not loot shops out of greed, but out of hunger.”
His remarks underscore how Pakistan’s deepening financial crisis has devastated the livelihoods and dignity of its working and middle-class citizens, leaving millions grappling with despair and economic insecurity.
