Washington, D.C.: President Donald Trump Condemns Shooting Near White House Targeting Two National Guard Members

Washington, D.C.: U.S. President Donald Trump issued a forceful condemnation after two National Guard members were shot near the White House. The President described the incident as “a horrific assault on our great National Guard warriors.”

The attack occurred just days before Thanksgiving, in an area close to the White House perimeter. President Trump said that violence against those who stand guard to protect the nation is something that “no country should ever tolerate.”

“An Act of Evil, Hatred, and Terror”

Speaking from the White House briefing room, President Trump called the shooting “an act of evil,” “an act of hatred,” and “an act of terror.” He stressed that the assault was not merely against two service members but represented “a crime against our nation” and “a crime against humanity.”

President Trump Criticizes the Previous Administration Over Suspect’s Background

President Trump highlighted details about the suspect and used the moment to sharply criticize the previous Biden administration. He stated that the Department of Homeland Security had “confirmed” that the arrested individual arrived in the United States from Afghanistan.

According to the President, the suspect entered the U.S. during the mass evacuation that followed the fall of the Afghan government in September 2021. Trump referred to Afghanistan as a “hellhole” and accused former President Biden’s administration of allowing the suspect to enter without proper vetting.

It was the Biden administration that placed him on the plane and brought him here,” Trump stated, calling for a full reassessment of the evacuation policies executed under the previous administration.

Renewed Call for Stronger Immigration Enforcement

In the wake of the attack, President Trump reiterated his commitment to enforcing stricter immigration controls. He said the U.S. must ensure that “all illegal migrants residing in our country are removed” and called for a comprehensive review of every Afghan refugee admitted during the previous administration, saying each case must be examined “from start to finish.”

To bolster security, the President announced the deployment of an additional 500 National Guard troops across Washington, D.C.

Details About the Suspect Emerge

Preliminary information indicates that the FBI believes the suspect matches the identity of a Washington State resident who immigrated from Afghanistan in 2021. Officials have identified him as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, who reportedly entered the U.S. under the former administration’s Operation Allies Welcome program.

Authorities said that after his arrest, fingerprint records were used to make a preliminary identification. An official confirmed that the suspect applied for asylum in 2024 and received approval earlier this year.

Officials noted that full verification of his identity is ongoing.

Investigation Actively Underway

Investigators recovered a handgun believed to have been used in the shooting. The weapon and other evidence collected at the scene are being examined to determine how the events unfolded. The motive for the attack has not yet been established, and authorities confirmed that the investigation remains active.
