Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh): At least four people were killed and several others injured after a passenger train collided with a goods train near Jairamnagar station in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district on Tuesday evening.
According to preliminary reports, a MEMU local train (No. 68733) operating between Gevra Road and Bilaspur crashed into a stationary goods train on the up line between Gatora and Bilaspur around 4 p.m.
Following the collision, train services on the route have been suspended, while several express and passenger trains have either been cancelled or diverted, railway officials confirmed.
Videos from the accident site showed the first coach of the Korba passenger train mounted onto the goods train due to the force of impact. Locals and passengers were seen gathering around the wreckage as rescue and relief operations were carried out by authorities.
Railway officials said that emergency response teams and medical units were immediately deployed to the site. “All necessary resources have been mobilized, and the injured passengers are receiving prompt medical attention,” a senior railway spokesperson said.
The cause of the collision is yet to be officially determined. A joint inquiry by the railway safety and operations departments has been initiated.
