‘Bin Laden Sought to Undermine US–Saudi Ties’: Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Responds to 9/11 Questions at White House

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, during his high-profile visit to the White House, asserted that Osama bin Laden intentionally used Saudi nationals in the September 11 attacks to fracture long-standing US–Saudi relations. His remarks came as families of 9/11 victims protested his presence in Washington, demanding accountability and transparency.

Speaking to US media, the Crown Prince stressed that bin Laden’s strategy was designed to drive a wedge between Riyadh and Washington at a critical moment in global geopolitics. “Based on CIA documents, Osama bin Laden used Saudi people for one main purpose: to destroy the American–Saudi relationship,” he said. Accepting any alternative interpretation, he argued, would “serve the very purpose Osama bin Laden intended.”

Addressing concerns raised by survivors and families of the victims, he noted that Saudi Arabia had implemented extensive reforms and security measures to ensure such an attack “never happens again.” He expressed sympathy for American families affected by the tragedy, calling it “painful,” but urged the public to focus on verified facts.

The Crown Prince also fielded questions from journalists on long-standing controversies, including Saudi Arabia’s alleged role in the 9/11 plot and the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The media interaction followed his joint appearance with US President Donald Trump, where both leaders announced a new civilian nuclear cooperation agreement and confirmed a major defence package involving the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia.

“He knows that a strong relationship between America and Saudi Arabia is bad for extremism and bad for terrorism,” the Crown Prince said, emphasising that bin Laden’s objective was to weaken global counter-terror efforts by damaging bilateral ties.

At a gala dinner later in the evening, President Trump announced that Saudi Arabia would be designated as one of only 20 “major non-NATO allies” of the United States—a strategic recognition intended to deepen defence and diplomatic cooperation. “I’m telling you this for the first time, because they wanted to keep it a little secret for tonight,” Trump remarked.
