CISF Foils Drone Attack on Uri Hydropower Plant After Operation Sindoor

New Delhi: Hours after India launched Operation Sindoor, Pakistan attempted to strike the Uri Hydroelectric Power Plant near the Line of Control (LoC). The attack, however, was successfully thwarted with no damage reported, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)—which protects strategic installations—said in an official statement on Tuesday.

The statement came as the CISF awarded the Director General’s Disc to 19 personnel stationed at the Uri Hydro Electric Power Projects (UHEP-I and II) for their exceptional courage in neutralising hostile drones and evacuating civilians while under Pakistani gunfire.

The honours were presented at a ceremony held at CISF Headquarters in New Delhi.

Pakistan’s Retaliation After Operation Sindoor

Providing details of the incident, the CISF said the events unfolded on the night of May 6, shortly after the Indian Army launched Operation Sindoor against terrorist hideouts across the LoC in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

“In retaliation, the Pakistan Army initiated intense and indiscriminate shelling on Indian territory, endangering key infrastructure such as the Uri hydroelectric projects and posing a grave threat to nearby civilian areas,” the statement read.

Located just a few kilometres from the LoC, CISF units deployed at the NHPC installations were placed at the frontline of this escalation.

CISF Neutralised Drones, Led Mass Evacuations

Despite continuous gunfire, CISF teams—under the leadership of Commandant Ravi Yadav and the Deputy Commandant—swiftly initiated protective measures to secure the installations and the adjoining township.

During the peak of the cross-border exchange, CISF troops shot down hostile drones aimed at the project sites and safeguarded the armoury by redistributing weapons to prevent their destruction.

As artillery shells landed dangerously close to residential quarters, CISF personnel undertook door-to-door evacuation, assisting women, children, NHPC employees, and their families—often while shelling continued overhead.

‘First Targeted Installation,’ Says Source

A security official familiar with the situation said the Uri hydroelectric project was among the first strategic assets targeted by Pakistan.

“The projects lie right at the LoC, so naturally they were hit early. But the intelligence network was strong, and our troops on the ground were fully prepared. Not only were drones neutralised, but a large-scale evacuation was completed with zero casualties,” the officer added.
