MOSCOW: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar delivered a firm message against terrorism at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Russia on Tuesday, demanding that the world adopt "zero tolerance" for the menace in all its forms and manifestations.
"There can be no justification, no looking away, no whitewashing of terrorism," he stated, asserting emphatically that India "has the right to defend its people against terrorism and will exercise it." Reiterating New Delhi’s call for collective, uncompromising action, he urged SCO leaders to ensure that combating terrorism remains a shared priority, leaving no room for leniency.
The Minister's sharp remarks gain significance coming just days after the Centre directed that the November 10 car explosion near the Red Fort be treated as a terror attack, consequently handing the probe over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Discussions on Bilateral Ties and Global Stability
Jaishankar, who arrived in Moscow for a three-day visit, is attending the SCO Heads of State Council meeting and engaging in a series of high-level discussions ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s anticipated visit to New Delhi next month.
Immediately upon landing, he met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov for wide-ranging discussions covering bilateral, regional, and global issues, including cooperation within the SCO, BRICS, the UN, and the G20, as reported by Russia's state-run TASS news agency.
During the meeting, Jaishankar underlined the importance of frank exchanges, especially amid the turbulent global order. "We will also be exchanging views on the complex global situation with the openness that has always characterised our ties," he noted, listing the Ukraine conflict, developments in the Middle East, and the situation in Afghanistan as key areas of discussion.
India, he added, supports recent international efforts aimed at peace, stressing, "An early cessation of the conflict and ensuring an enduring peace is in the interest of the entire international community." He emphasized that India-Russia relations have "long been a factor of stability in international relations," asserting that their continued growth is not only mutually beneficial but also fundamentally contributes to global stability.
