‘Our Constitution, Our Pride’: Nation Observes Constitution Day

New Delhi: India on Tuesday marked the 75th anniversary of the adoption of its Constitution—often described as the cornerstone of the world’s largest democracy. On 26 November 1949, the Constituent Assembly formally approved the Constitution, a landmark moment now observed nationwide as Constitution Day or Samvidhan Divas. The Union Government instituted this annual observance in 2015 to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Constitution.

To honour the values enshrined in the Constitution—justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity—ministries, universities, schools, and public institutions across the country organised a range of events. This year’s official theme is “Hamara Samvidhan, Hamara Swabhiman” (Our Constitution, Our Pride).

Prime Minister’s Message: ‘The Constitution Gave Us the Strength to Dream’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended greetings to the nation, emphasising that the Constitution has empowered ordinary citizens like himself to serve at the highest levels of public office for over two decades. He recalled bowing his head on the steps of Parliament upon entering in 2014, and placing the Constitution on his forehead in 2019 as a mark of respect.

“Every action of ours must strengthen the Constitution and advance our national goals. It is our collective responsibility to fulfil the vision of the framers of our Constitution,” the Prime Minister said.

Rahul Gandhi: ‘A Protective Shield for the Marginalised’

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi highlighted the guarantees offered by the Constitution, describing it as a protective shield that ensures equality, justice, and dignity for all Indians—irrespective of caste, religion, language, or economic background. He vowed to oppose any attempt to undermine constitutional principles.

“As long as the Constitution is safeguarded, the rights of every Indian remain secure,” he stated.

Other Leaders Call for Responsibility and Unity

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reminded citizens that the Constitution encapsulates the guiding values of India’s democratic journey. He urged the nation to work collectively toward the future envisioned by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath noted that justice, equality, and fraternity form the core of the Constitution, describing it as the foundation of India’s unity, stability, and progress.

National Outreach to Promote Constitutional Awareness

To deepen public understanding of constitutional values, the Union Government is conducting nationwide outreach programmes under the theme “Our Constitution, Our Pride.” This initiative builds on last year’s campaign, Hamara Samvidhan – Hamara Samman, which the government says reached more than one crore people across the country.
