Aviation investigators have concluded an initial on-site examination following a fatal light aircraft crash near Lisselan, close to Tramore in Co Waterford, on Thursday afternoon. The incident, which occurred at approximately 12:50 pm, claimed the life of the aircraft’s sole occupant, according to An Garda Síochána.
Emergency services, including rescue helicopters and police units, responded swiftly to the crash site. The Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) of the Department of Transport deployed four inspectors to conduct a preliminary assessment of the wreckage. In a statement, the AAIU confirmed that the initial examination was completed by 9 pm, after which the team departed the site.
Investigators will return on Friday morning to oversee the recovery of the aircraft, which will be transported to the AAIU’s wreckage examination facility in Gormanston, Co Meath, for further analysis.
Online flight-tracking data indicates that the privately operated Vulcanair P68C had been flying from Sligo toward Béziers in France before turning around south of Ireland and diverting toward Waterford Airport. The aircraft crashed shortly after the change in course.
Sinn Féin TD for Waterford, David Cullinane, described the incident as a “shock” to the local community and expressed condolences, saying the thoughts of residents are with the individual who lost their life.
