New Delhi: An Air India flight operating from Delhi to Mumbai was forced to return to the national capital shortly after take-off on Monday after the crew detected a technical issue, the airline confirmed.
Flight AI887 landed safely at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, and all passengers and crew disembarked without incident. The decision to return was taken in accordance with standard operating procedures, an Air India spokesperson said.
“The crew operating flight AI887 from Delhi to Mumbai on December 22 decided to return to Delhi shortly after take-off due to a technical issue, in line with standard operating procedure. The aircraft landed safely, and all passengers and crew have disembarked,” the spokesperson said.
The airline expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to passengers and said the aircraft was undergoing mandatory technical checks. Air India added that its ground staff in Delhi were extending immediate assistance to affected passengers and that alternative arrangements were being made to transport them to Mumbai at the earliest.
According to sources cited by CNN-News18, the aircraft reportedly developed an engine-related problem, prompting the crew to abort the onward journey as a precautionary measure. The exact number of passengers on board was not immediately available.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation later acknowledged the incident and said it had sought a detailed report from Air India. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has also been directed to conduct a thorough investigation.

A detailed report has been sought from Air India, and DGCA has been directed to conduct a comprehensive probe,” the Ministry said in a post on X.
The Ministry further instructed the airline to provide all necessary assistance to affected passengers and accommodate them on subsequent flights, reiterating that passenger safety remains paramount.
Meanwhile, flight operations at Delhi airport were impacted on Monday due to dense fog and smog across the national capital. While the number of affected flights was not immediately known, airport authorities said low-visibility procedures were in force and advised passengers to check with their respective airlines for real-time updates on flight schedules.
