Bhagalpur: The areas surrounding Bhagalpur Railway Station, including Station Chowk and nearby localities, have reportedly turned into hotspots for illegal sex work, particularly during night hours, raising serious concerns about public safety and policing.
According to local residents, sex workers become active after dark in areas such as Sujaganj, MP Dwivedi Road, Tatarpur Road and beneath the Lohia Bridge. Many of the women involved reportedly travel daily from neighbouring states, including Jharkhand and West Bengal, while others are said to come from nearby districts such as Sahibganj, Dumka and Naugachia. They allegedly arrive at night and return by morning.
What has surprised residents the most is that these activities continue unabated despite the station area being surrounded by multiple police jurisdictions, including Kotwali Police Station, Government Railway Police (GRP), Mojahillur and Tatarpur police stations. Locals allege that suspicious activities have become routine late at night across key stretches such as Station Chowk, MP Dwivedi Road, Sujaganj Road, Tatarpur Road and the narrow lanes of Lohapatti.
Residents further claim that while some women have been involved in the trade for several years, the number of young women entering the area has increased sharply in recent months. Initial contact with clients reportedly takes place in open public spaces, following which, after negotiations, the women are taken to hotels or other locations.
When questioned about security, some of the women allegedly claimed that arrangements were already in place and that there was “nothing to worry about.” Local sources say the transactions are conducted directly by the women themselves, without the involvement of intermediaries. The reported charges range from ₹350 to ₹1,500, and in some cases up to ₹2,000.
The growing visibility of the illegal trade has caused unease among residents and commuters, who are now demanding stricter enforcement and coordinated action by law enforcement agencies to curb unlawful activities in the heart of the city.
