Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday expressed deep shock and distress over the alleged mismanagement at Salt Lake Stadium during an event attended by global football icon Lionel Messi. The Chief Minister also issued a public apology to Messi and the thousands of fans who had gathered at the venue.
In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Banerjee said she was “deeply disturbed and shocked” by the manner in which the event was handled. She noted that she herself was on her way to the stadium to attend the programme, along with thousands of football enthusiasts who had assembled to catch a glimpse of the Argentine legend. #WATCH | Kolkata, West Bengal: Angry fans threw bottles and chairs from the stands at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium

“I sincerely apologise to Lionel Messi, as well as to all sports lovers and his fans, for this unfortunate incident,” the Chief Minister said in her statement.
Sources indicated that the organisers faced criticism for lapses in crowd management and inadequate arrangements at the stadium, which led to inconvenience for attendees. The incident has sparked calls for accountability and a review of event-management protocols for large-scale sporting programmes in the state.
