According to the Goa Police, the tragedy resulted in the deaths of 25 individuals—four identified as tourists and 14 as staff members. The identities of seven victims are still being verified. Six others sustained injuries and are currently undergoing treatment.
The police stated that the cause of the fire has yet to be determined. Both the fire department and forensic teams have launched a detailed investigation, and legal action is in progress.
Located near the Arpora River backwaters, the nightclub is accessible only through exceptionally narrow approach lanes. Although promoted as an “island club,” its limited entry and exit points severely hindered evacuation efforts.
Emergency responders faced significant challenges; fire engines could not reach the premises directly and had to be parked nearly 400 metres away. A senior fire officer told PTI that the restricted access delayed the firefighting operation substantially. By the time fire personnel reached the structure on foot, dense smoke had already engulfed most of the building. Many victims are believed to have died due to suffocation after being trapped in cramped interior passages without a clear escape route.
Authorities continue to probe the incident as questions grow over safety compliance, structural design, and emergency preparedness at the club.
