Pakistan/India: A woman from Karachi has issued an emotional appeal for intervention after alleging that her husband abandoned her and is now planning a secret second marriage in Delhi. Her video plea, addressed directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has gone viral and reignited debate on cross-border marital disputes involving Indian and Pakistani nationals.
A Marriage Marked by Hope — and Sudden Abandonment
According to her statement, Nikita Nagdev, a resident of Karachi, married Vikram Nagdev on January 26, 2020, in Karachi, following Hindu rituals. Vikram, a Pakistani-origin man residing in Indore on a long-term visa, brought her to India a month later on February 26.
However, Nikita alleges that the marriage took a dark turn when Vikram abandoned her at the Attari border on July 9, 2020, citing visa complications, and forced her to return to Pakistan. Since then, she claims, he has made no effort to bring her back.
"I kept requesting him to call me to India, but he refused every time," she says in her video.
“Women Will Lose Faith in Justice” — Nikita’s Viral Appeal
In her emotional video message from Karachi, Nikita says she was subjected to mental harassment and a drastic change in behaviour from her in-laws after marriage.
"I learned that my husband was having an affair with one of my relatives. When I confronted my father-in-law, he said, ‘Boys have affairs, nothing can be done,’” she alleges.
She further states she was pressured to return to Pakistan during the COVID-19 lockdown, and since then has repeatedly been denied re-entry to India.
"If justice is not delivered, women will lose faith in the system. Many girls suffer abuse in their marital homes. I request everyone to stand with me," she said.
Complaint Filed as Husband Allegedly Plans Second Marriage
Upon returning to Karachi, Nikita says she discovered that Vikram was preparing to marry another woman from Delhi. Feeling betrayed while still legally married, she filed a written complaint on January 27, 2025.
Her case was taken up by the Sindhi Panch Mediation and Legal Counsel Centre, which operates with authorisation from the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Notices were sent to Vikram and the woman he planned to marry. Despite a hearing, mediation failed.
On April 30, 2025, the panel reported that since neither spouse holds Indian citizenship, the matter legally falls under Pakistan’s jurisdiction and recommended that Vikram be deported.
Indian Authorities Also Examining the Case
This is not the first time the issue has surfaced in India. In May 2025, Nikita approached the Indore Social Panchayat, which also recommended Vikram’s deportation.
Indore Collector Ashish Singh confirmed that an inquiry had been launched, stating that appropriate action would be taken upon reviewing the findings.
