India and Russia reaffirmed their shared commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East/West Asia in a joint statement issued following the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The statement emphasized the need for restraint, protection of civilians, and adherence to international law amid ongoing regional tensions. Both nations urged all parties to avoid actions that could escalate conflict or undermine regional security. They also underscored the importance of resolving the Iran nuclear issue through constructive dialogue.
Expressing concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, India and Russia called on all stakeholders to uphold existing agreements aimed at cessation of hostilities, delivery of humanitarian assistance, and the pursuit of sustainable peace.
Although the joint statement did not directly reference the Ukraine conflict, Prime Minister Modi reiterated during the meeting that India is “not neutral" and stands firmly “on the side of peace.” He noted that India and Russia have been in continuous communication since the start of the crisis, with Moscow regularly briefing New Delhi. “India believes in peace… India is not neutral, we are on the side of peace,” Modi stated.
President Putin, addressing the media after the 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit in New Delhi, highlighted that both nations conduct an independent and self-sufficient foreign policy, working closely with like-minded partners in BRICS, the SCO, and the wider Global South. He reaffirmed Russia’s support for India’s upcoming BRICS chairmanship, promising full cooperation.
Prime Minister Modi hailed the longstanding partnership between the two countries, describing India–Russia friendship as a “pole star” that has remained steady through decades of global upheaval. “I am confident that in the years to come, our friendship will continue to strengthen our ability to face global challenges, and that this trust will further enrich our shared future,” he said.
