A casual snack break turned into a medical emergency in Uttar Pradesh’s Auraiya district when a woman’s jaw dislocated while eating a golgappa. The incident, captured on video, has gone viral, prompting widespread concern among pani-puri enthusiasts.
The woman, identified as Inkila Devi, had accompanied a family member to a nearby clinic and decided to stop at a roadside golgappa stall on their way back. According to her companion, they felt thirsty and chose to have a quick snack. While the companion finished her plate without any trouble, Inkila’s attempt to eat a particularly large golgappa took an unexpected turn.
As she tried to fit the oversized snack into her mouth, her jaw abruptly dislocated, leaving her unable to close it and causing intense pain. Shocked family members rushed her back to the clinic, where doctors provided initial first aid. However, due to the severity of the dislocation, she was immediately referred to a higher medical facility for specialised treatment.
Relatives said Inkila had never experienced such a problem before, adding to their alarm. Medical staff reportedly struggled to reposition her jaw due to the extent of the dislocation.
Though golgappas remain one of India’s most beloved street foods, health experts advise mindful consumption—especially avoiding extra-large portions that might strain the jaw.
What Is Jaw Dislocation?
Jaw dislocation occurs when the lower jawbone (mandible) slips out of its normal position at the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), making it difficult or impossible to close the mouth. It is considered a medical emergency and requires prompt intervention by a healthcare professional, who must manually guide the jaw back into place.
