CHENNAI — India plans to expand its space launch infrastructure, with four operational launch pads expected by 2029, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman V Narayanan has said.
The expansion aims to meet rising domestic and global demand for satellite launches. It includes a dedicated 2,000-acre Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) complex at Kulasekarapattinam in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district.
Narayanan clarified that ISRO would not be privatised. However, partnerships with private companies and start-ups will play an important role in expanding the country’s space capabilities.
ISRO plans to support private enterprises through technology transfers and technical assistance, helping strengthen India’s space industry while creating opportunities for skilled employment.
The initiative is part of India’s broader effort to expand launch capacity and respond to growing demand for satellite deployment worldwide.
