Police on Wednesday dismantled two active women-led criminal gangs—one operating between Gujarat and Delhi, and the other based in Delhi’s Anand Parbat area—following a series of coordinated raids.
Both groups were allegedly involved in high-value thefts targeting women commuters at crowded public transit hubs. Five women have been arrested so far, including a habitual offender with 13 previous criminal cases.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways) K.P.S. Malhotra said the arrests were the result of an intensive, technology-driven investigation that combined extensive CCTV analysis with human intelligence inputs. Officers examined more than 100 CCTV recordings from multiple locations to track movements, identify repeat offenders, and establish links between incidents across districts.
“The two gangs shared the same modus operandi. They operated inside lifts and on escalators, exploiting rush-hour congestion to discreetly remove jewellery, watches and other valuables from unsuspecting women. The thefts were swift, coordinated, and executed within seconds before the culprits vanished into the crowd,” DCP Malhotra said.
A breakthrough came from key CCTV footage captured at Delhi Sarai Rohilla Railway Station and New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS), where the accused were seen targeting women in densely crowded areas. Sustained surveillance and tracking led to coordinated raids and subsequent arrests.
Police have recovered gold jewellery, high-end watches, and cash worth approximately ₹1 crore, all believed to have been stolen during the gang’s operations.
DCP Malhotra noted that the gangs were highly organised and deliberately targeted women, as jewellery theft in congested spaces carried a high reward with minimal risk of detection. In response, police have increased surveillance at major transit points and urged passengers—particularly women—to remain vigilant in crowded lifts and on escalators, where such gangs typically operate.
The investigation is ongoing, with police examining additional linkages and searching for possible associates connected to the network.
