Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir has been suspended from the party following a controversy over his remarks about constructing a mosque in Murshidabad modelled on the Babri Masjid.
Senior TMC leader Firhad Hakim announced the suspension, stating that Kabir had previously been cautioned and asked to correct his conduct. His continued failure to do so compelled the party to take disciplinary action.
Following the announcement, Kabir said he would launch his own political party on 22 December. “I am in the party because of Mamata Banerjee. If she asks me to leave, I will. I came to know about the suspension from the media. I will resign from the TMC tomorrow,” he said. He added that the people of Murshidabad would “give their answer” and asserted that he would fight against both the BJP and the TMC.
Kabir's suspension comes in the wake of his controversial claim that NH-34 would be under ‘Muslim control’ on 6 December, a statement that triggered strong criticism within the Trinamool Congress. Party leaders said the remarks were unacceptable and inconsistent with the TMC’s position.
The development adds another political flashpoint in West Bengal just months ahead of next year’s assembly elections, heightening tensions within the state’s political landscape
