Mumbai:In a closely watched contest, the election to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has resulted in a hung house, with no single party securing an absolute majority. Control of the 227-member civic body requires the support of at least 114 councillors.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats, but falls short of the numbers needed to form the administration on its own. The support of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction, which secured 29 seats, has therefore become crucial.

If the BJP and the Shinde faction join hands, the alliance would command the support of 118 councillors, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 114. This arithmetic has all but sealed the formation of a BJP–Shinde alliance government in the country’s richest municipal corporation.
Resort Politics Comes Into Play
With the Shinde faction holding the balance of power, steps have reportedly been taken to prevent any attempt at poaching councillors. All 29 councillors of the Shinde-led Shiv Sena have been moved to a five-star hotel in Bandra.
While the move has officially been described as a three-day workshop, political observers view it as a precautionary measure to guard against possible defections—a phenomenon commonly referred to as “resort politics”.
Political Stakes Rise Ahead of Mayor Election
As the mayoral election approaches, Maharashtra’s political landscape is expected to witness intense manoeuvring. The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena is believed to be exploring options to reclaim control of the civic body, while the BJP–Shinde alliance is working to consolidate its numbers and prevent any last-minute surprises.
The coming days are likely to be decisive, with the battle for Mumbai’s civic administration entering a critical phase.
