Bengaluru: A police inspector attached to the K.P. Agrahara Police Station in Bengaluru was arrested by the Lokayukta police on Thursday while allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹4 lakh from a city-based builder.
The accused officer, identified as Govindaraju, was caught red-handed at the City Armed Reserve (CAR) Grounds in Chamarajpet while receiving the money from the complainant, builder Mohammed Akbar. Visuals of the arrest, which show the inspector breaking down in tears at the scene, have since surfaced on social media. pic.twitter.com/zQFdkCXPBf
According to officials, Govindaraju had allegedly demanded a bribe of ₹5 lakh from Akbar in exchange for dropping him from a cheating case in which the builder and two others were named as accused. As part of the alleged arrangement, Akbar paid an initial instalment of ₹1 lakh on January 24.
The builder subsequently approached the Lokayukta police and agreed to cooperate with the authorities. Acting on their instructions, Akbar assured the inspector that the remaining amount would be paid on Thursday and asked him to come to the CAR Grounds to collect the money.
At around 4.30 pm, Govindaraju arrived at the location in official police uniform and vehicle. Shortly after he accepted the currency notes treated with phenolphthalein powder, Lokayukta officials intervened and took him into custody.
The inspector has been arrested under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Officials said further investigations are underway to determine whether other personnel were involved in the alleged bribery.
