Texas Executes Double-Murderer Charles Victor Thompson; First U.S. Execution of 2026

HOUSTON – In the first capital punishment carried out in the United States for the year 2026, the state of Texas has executed 55-year-old Charles Victor Thompson.

The death sentence was administered via lethal injection at the state penitentiary, concluding a legal saga that spanned nearly three decades.

A Brutal Crime of Passion

The case dates back to 1998, when Thompson was convicted for the shooting deaths of his former girlfriend and her partner in Houston. Prosecutors characterized the murders as a violent act of retribution, a crime that shocked the local community and set the stage for one of Texas’s most high-profile criminal trials.

The Audacious Jailbreak

Thompson’s name gained further notoriety during his trial when he managed a daring escape from the Houston jail. His flight from justice triggered an intensive three-day manhunt that ended only when authorities intercepted him near the border while he was attempting to flee into Canada. Following his recapture, the court moved forward with the death penalty, citing the severity of his crimes and his disregard for the law.

Final Appeals and Execution

Leading up to the scheduled execution, Thompson’s defense team filed a final appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court seeking a stay or a commutation of the sentence. However, the high court declined to intervene, clearing the way for the state to proceed.

Prison officials confirmed that the execution process began in the early evening. Thompson was pronounced dead 22 minutes after the lethal chemicals were administered.
