Incidents of harassment of women on public transport continue to be a serious concern across India. In a recent case from Karnataka, a young woman has been widely praised for courageously confronting her alleged harasser and documenting the incident on camera.
The incident occurred on a moving bus in Karnataka, where the woman recorded a video of a man who she said behaved inappropriately towards her. She later shared the video on social media, tagging the police, which led to swift attention from authorities. The footage quickly went viral, with many users applauding her for speaking out and refusing to remain silent. Shocking Assault During Bus Journey: Girl Harassed While Travelling from Ankola to Karwar

In the video, the woman recounts that she was travelling to Ankola on a state-run RTC bus along with her brother. As her brother had a window seat, the two were seated together on a three-seat row when a 28-year-old man occupied the empty seat next to her. She said that since it was a government bus, she could not ask him to move to another seat.
The woman said she fell asleep during the journey, but woke up moments later to find the man’s hand on her chest. “I was terrified and shaking,” she said in the video, describing the shock and fear she experienced.
Despite her initial fear, she said she decided not to back down. She confronted the man, asking him whether he boarded the bus to behave in such a manner. When he remained silent, she raised her voice, pushed him away from her seat, and alerted others.
As the bus stopped and the man attempted to get down, the woman recorded him on her phone and struck him on the head in anger. The man was seen denying the allegations, claiming he had done nothing wrong. In the video, the woman said she wanted the footage to reach the man’s family, including his father and sisters, so they would know about his behaviour.
She also used the platform to urge other women not to remain silent or fearful in similar situations. “Even if no one supports you, stand up for yourself,” she said, encouraging women to assert their rights and seek help.
Police in Ankola have registered a case in connection with the incident. Superintendent of Police M.N. Deepan said strict action would be taken against the accused as per the law.
The incident has once again highlighted both the persistence of harassment on public transport and the growing role of social media in empowering victims to seek accountability.
