Honey Trap Syndicate Busted in Kannur: Four Apprehended, Including Minor

KANNUR: The Chakkarakkal police have neutralized a honey trap syndicate that allegedly targeted individuals through social media and dating applications.

Four persons, including a 17-year-old girl, were taken into custody following a coordinated sting operation after they reportedly attempted to extort ₹10 lakh from a resident of Machery.

The suspects have been identified as A.K. Abdul Kalam, Ibrahim Sajmal Arshad, and C. Maimoona, all hailing from Kanhangad, along with the minor associate.

The Modus Operandi

According to investigative sources, the gang initiated contact with the victim via a popular dating app. After establishing a rapport over several days, they lured him to a private residence in Kanhangad. Once inside, the victim was allegedly restrained and threatened at knifepoint. The perpetrators then forcibly filmed the victim in an uncompromising position.

Utilizing the footage as leverage, the syndicate demanded a ransom of ₹10 lakh, stipulating that if liquid cash was unavailable, the equivalent value in gold ornaments must be surrendered to prevent the clip from being circulated online.

Strategic Police Intervention

The victim managed to exit the premises and immediately alerted the Chakkarakkal police. Under the guidance of law enforcement, a trap was set: the victim contacted the suspects, expressing his willingness to pay the demanded sum. As the group arrived at the designated rendezvous point to collect the cash, a police team led by Sub-Inspectors Ambujakshan, Ranjith, and Premarajan moved in and apprehended them.

Preliminary reports suggest that the adult suspects—Maimoona, Abdul Kalam, and Ibrahim—are relatives of the minor involved in the case.

Broader Investigation Underway

Authorities are currently investigating whether the syndicate has victimized others using similar tactics. A forensic examination of the suspects' mobile devices is expected to provide further leads.

The police have issued a public advisory urging citizens to exercise extreme caution when interacting with strangers on digital platforms and to report any instances of digital blackmail or extortion immediately.
