Relations between the two South Asian neighbors have faced intense strain since the political upheaval and Hasina’s departure to India. Hasina, who faces severe legal proceedings and a death sentence issued by a tribunal in Bangladesh, recently drew sharp reactions from Dhaka after addressing an online conference and hinting at plans to return.
During Monday's meeting, the Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement noting that Rahman explicitly "emphasised the need to create a conducive environment to further advance the bilateral relations between the two countries". Dhaka also reiterated its call for New Delhi to expedite the formal extradition of the former premier.
Path Forward and Diplomatic Stance
While Rahman's administration has expressed a willingness to stabilize relations and maintain open diplomatic channels with its largest neighbor, the current leadership insists that mutual trust relies heavily on addressing these core political sensitivities.
In response, the Indian High Commission noted on social media that High Commissioner Trivedi reiterated India's commitment to working alongside Bangladesh in a "positive, constructive and forward-looking manner".
