New Delhi: The Union government on Tuesday firmly rejected claims circulating on social media that India has suspended trade with Afghanistan, calling them “false, baseless, and misleading.”
The clarification came after several Pakistani social media accounts alleged that New Delhi had halted trade ties due to the current security situation in Iran.
In an official response, the government stated that a forged letter is being circulated online as part of a misinformation campaign. Authorities confirmed that India has not taken any decision to suspend trade with Afghanistan.
The Press Information Bureau’s fact-checking unit (PIB Fact Check) addressed the issue through an official social media post, stating:
“A fabricated letter is being circulated by certain propaganda accounts, falsely claiming that India has temporarily suspended its trade activities with Afghanistan due to rising tensions in Iran. This letter is fake.”
The government acknowledged that the situation in Iran remains serious, but emphasised that it has had no bearing on India’s trade engagement with Afghanistan. Officials said the false claims appear to have been spread to exploit regional tensions and create confusion.
According to official trade data, India’s economic engagement with Afghanistan has continued steadily. During the financial year 2024–25, India exported goods worth approximately USD 318.91 million to Afghanistan, while imports from the country stood at around USD 689.81 million.
Analysts note that Afghanistan, being landlocked, has been exploring alternative trade routes through Iran and Central Asia, particularly amid strained relations with Pakistan in recent years. Against this backdrop, the government cautioned the public against relying on unverified social media claims and urged citizens to refer only to official sources for accurate information.
Authorities reiterated that misinformation campaigns aimed at distorting India’s foreign and trade policies would be firmly countered with facts.
