New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Tuesday initiated legal action against an associate professor of Jamia Millia Islamia under provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, following a complaint by a university employee.
The case stems from allegations made by a staff member of the university’s Polytechnic department, who accused the professor of using abusive language and engaging in physical aggression. Police clarified that, contrary to claims circulating on social media, the case does not involve any allegation of religious conversion.
In an official statement, the Delhi Police said an FIR has been registered on the complaint of Ram Phool Meena, a Graduate Education Officer at JMI Polytechnic, against Associate Professor Riazuddin of the Civil Engineering Department. The FIR has been filed under Section 3(1)(r) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, along with Section 115(2) of the Indian Penal Code, and an investigation is currently underway.
Addressing misinformation online, police dismissed claims of forced religious conversion as factually incorrect. “The complainant has not alleged any attempt at religious conversion. Reports suggesting otherwise are false,” the statement said.
According to police, the complaint was filed on Monday by an employee working at the Okhla-based institute. The complainant alleged that on January 13, the associate professor approached her desk, used derogatory language, and behaved aggressively. “Appropriate legal action is being taken. Statements are being recorded and evidence is being collected as part of the investigation,” police said.
Jamia Millia Islamia, however, disputed the assault allegations and described the video circulating on social media as fake. University sources said no official complaint regarding an assault or caste-based abuse has been received by the administration from its staff.
A university spokesperson stated, “We have not received any formal complaint from our employee regarding an assault or a caste-based incident. The video circulating on social media is fake and has no connection with the alleged incident.”
The Delhi Police also urged the media and the public to refrain from sharing unverified information that could disturb communal harmony. Sources added that the complainant is a Upper Division Clerk (UDC) in the Polytechnic department.
The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
