Obscene Video Controversy: Karnataka DGP Suspended as Siddaramaiah Government Takes Swift Action

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has suspended senior IPS officer Ramachandra Rao, Director General of Police (Civil Rights Enforcement), following the circulation of allegedly obscene videos purportedly showing him behaving inappropriately with women inside his official chamber.

The swift action was taken on the directions of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, as the controversy triggered widespread outrage and embarrassment for the state administration.

Viral Video Sparks Immediate Action

The controversy erupted on Monday after explicit videos, allegedly featuring Rao, began circulating widely on social media. The footage reportedly shows the officer, dressed in official uniform, engaging in intimate and inappropriate conduct with multiple women inside his office. As the videos gained traction, the Chief Minister sought an urgent report from the Home Department.

After reviewing the available material, Siddaramaiah reportedly expressed strong displeasure, describing the incident as a serious breach of conduct that undermines public trust in the police force. Subsequently, orders were issued to place the officer under suspension with immediate effect.

Officer Denies Allegations

Ramachandra Rao has categorically denied all allegations against him, claiming the videos are fabricated and digitally manipulated. He has alleged that the footage is part of a deliberate conspiracy aimed at tarnishing his reputation. Rao also stated that he attempted to meet Home Minister G. Parameshwara to present his version of events but was not granted an appointment. He is a 1993-batch IPS officer.

Family Previously Linked to High-Profile Gold Smuggling Case

Rao’s family has previously been in the public spotlight. His daughter, actor Ranya Rao, was arrested in March 2025 in connection with one of Karnataka’s largest gold smuggling cases. She was apprehended upon her return from Dubai with 14.8 kilograms of gold valued at approximately ₹12.56 crore. Subsequent raids at her Bengaluru residence reportedly led to the seizure of gold jewellery and large amounts of cash.

Probe Intensified

The Karnataka government has ordered a detailed investigation to determine the authenticity of the viral videos. Digital forensic analysis will be conducted as part of the probe, following which further legal and departmental action will be considered.

Government sources said the administration has adopted a zero-tolerance approach toward misconduct by senior officials, emphasising that violations of discipline and ethics—particularly at high levels of public service—will not be condoned under any circumstances.

The investigation is ongoing.
