Pilgrimage Turns Fatal
The brothers had set out on January 23 to visit the renowned Bharmani Mata Temple in Bharmour subdivision, accompanied by their pet dog. Vikasit, who had a keen interest in trekking and videography, reportedly climbed further uphill to capture footage when weather conditions deteriorated rapidly.
A sudden blizzard, coupled with plunging temperatures well below freezing, caused the brothers to lose their way. Later that evening, Vikasit managed to call home, informing his family that they had reached a place known as Dafar Ka Goth and that his phone battery was running low. Contact was lost soon after.

A joint search operation involving the police, NDRF, SDRF, and the Indian Army was launched. After days of combing the snow-covered slopes, rescuers located Piyush’s body near Kukru Kanda hill. Beside him stood their pet dog—shivering, weak from hunger, yet steadfastly refusing to leave or allow anyone near its owner.
Rescuers said the dog had remained there for nearly 72 hours, enduring extreme cold and starvation while guarding the body. Vikasit’s body was later found in a nearby mountain stream. Both bodies, along with the dog, were airlifted by helicopter due to the treacherous terrain.
A Village in Mourning
Bharmour MLA Janak Raj described the rescue as deeply emotional. The bodies were handed over to the family for last rites, and the dog was reunited with the grieving relatives.
As Chamba mourns the loss of two young lives, the unwavering loyalty displayed by the pet has touched hearts across the region—serving as a poignant reminder of silent devotion amid nature’s unforgiving fury.
