Shocking footage has emerged capturing the moment a van carrying Greek football supporters was torn apart in a head-on collision with a truck in Romania, killing seven fans of PAOK Thessaloniki who were en route to France to watch their team play.
The fatal accident occurred during an overtaking manoeuvre as the minibus was travelling through Romania on the way to Lyon, where PAOK were scheduled to face a French club in a UEFA Europa League fixture. According to reports, three other passengers sustained critical injuries and remain hospitalised. Emergency services rushed to the site, but seven supporters died at the scene.
PAOK Thessaloniki, one of Greece’s most prominent football clubs, is based in the northern city of Thessaloniki. The victims were part of a group of dedicated fans undertaking a long overland journey from Greece through Romania to support their team in European competition, regarded as the continent’s second-tier club tournament after the Champions League.
National and Football Community Mourns
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed deep shock and sorrow over the tragedy.
“Deeply shaken, I was informed of the tragic accident in Romania that cost the lives of seven young compatriots,” he said in a statement. “The Greek government and our embassy are in close coordination with local authorities, providing every possible support.”
“In these difficult moments, together with all Greeks, I extend my sincerest condolences to the families of the victims and to the PAOK community. We all hope for the swift recovery of those injured,” the prime minister added.
PAOK club president Ivan Savvidis described the incident as “an unspeakable tragedy,” saying he was devastated by the loss of young supporters who had travelled to stand by their team.
Messages of condolence also poured in from supporters’ groups and rival Greek clubs, including Olympiakos, Panathinaikos, and Aris, highlighting the widespread sense of mourning across the country’s football community.
Authorities in Romania are continuing investigations into the cause of the crash, while efforts remain focused on supporting the injured and assisting the families of the victims.
