Ahead of voting in the civic body elections, the ruling Mahayuti alliance has registered a significant organisational victory, with 68 of its candidates elected unopposed across multiple local bodies in Maharashtra.
Of these, 44 candidates belong to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), underlining the alliance’s strong grassroots presence and electoral management.
Friday marked the final day for the withdrawal of nomination papers. The exit of candidates from opposition parties and rival alliances paved the way for the uncontested victories of Mahayuti nominees in several municipal corporations and councils.
The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) recorded the highest number of such wins, with 21 Mahayuti candidates declared elected—15 from the BJP and six from the Shiv Sena. In north Maharashtra’s Jalgaon, traditionally a stronghold of both parties, the alliance secured 12 unopposed seats, evenly split between the BJP and the Shiv Sena.
The trend extended to Panvel in the MMR, where seven BJP candidates were elected uncontested. The party also notched up six unopposed victories in Bhiwandi, an area that has long been considered a bastion of the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar faction).
In Thane district, despite visible strains between the BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena in the deputy chief minister’s home turf, the Shiv Sena managed to secure six uncontested wins. The developments, however, were accompanied by protests from the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), which raised questions over the conduct of the process and the ruling alliance’s approach.
Elsewhere, three BJP candidates were elected unopposed in Dhule. In Ahilya Nagar, the Nationalist Congress Party won two uncontested seats, while the BJP secured one.
Political observers view these uncontested victories as a morale booster for the ruling alliance, coming on the heels of its near clean sweep in the recently concluded municipal council elections. The outcome is also expected to allow Mahayuti partners to conserve resources and focus their campaign efforts on more competitive wards in the run-up to polling.
