Outrage Over Video of Bangladeshi Youth Boasting About Killing Hindu Police Officer During July Unrest

Widespread outrage has erupted following the circulation of a video on social media in which a Bangladeshi youth is seen boasting about the killing of a Hindu police officer during the violence that rocked the country in July 2024, while also issuing open threats to law enforcement authorities.

The video was shared on X by investigative journalist and author Sahidul Hasan Khokon, who identified the speaker as a student coordinator from Habiganj district in northeastern Bangladesh.

In the clip, the youth can be heard threatening the officer-in-charge of a police station and warning that the station would be set ablaze. Referring to what he calls the “July Movement,” he claims that the Baniachong police station had already been torched. Most disturbingly, he makes a chilling assertion while referring to the killing of Sub-Inspector Santosh Babu, saying, “We burned the Hindu officer, SI Santosh.” The statement is delivered without any visible fear or remorse, even as he appears to be speaking from within a police station

According to Bangladesh census data, Habiganj district has a predominantly Bengali Muslim population, accounting for approximately 84 per cent of residents, while Bengali Hindus—around 16 per cent—constitute the primary minority community. Although Muslims form the majority, Hindu communities have historically lived in concentrated pockets across the district, particularly in and around towns such as Baniachong and Habiganj Sadar. The remaining population comprises small numbers of Christians and indigenous groups.

The Lynching of SI Santosh Babu

The remarks in the video have renewed attention on the brutal lynching of Sub-Inspector Santosh Babu at the Baniachong police station in Habiganj district on August 5, 2024. According to reports published by Bangladeshi daily Desh Rupantar, the incident occurred just hours before then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned, amid escalating political unrest across the country.

The violence reportedly erupted in the evening when a mob attacked the Baniachong police station. Police officials, including SI Santosh Babu, opened fire in what was described as an act of self-defence to disperse the crowd. Three people were killed on the spot, while several others were injured. One of the injured later succumbed to injuries in hospital.

Reports state that around 1 a.m., the mob returned and surrounded the police station. When military personnel arrived at the scene, the attackers allegedly agreed to allow all other officers to leave, demanding that SI Santosh Babu be handed over. At approximately 2:15 a.m., he was beaten to death. His body was reportedly left on the road until the following day, after which it was further desecrated by the mob.

The incident remains one of the most disturbing episodes of mob violence during Bangladesh’s recent period of political turmoil, drawing renewed scrutiny amid the circulation of the video.
