Stunt With Cobra Turns Fatal in Rampur; Elderly Man Dies After Snake Bite, Video Emerges

Rampur/Uttarpredesh:   A reckless attempt to handle a cobra proved fatal for an elderly man in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district after the snake bit him multiple times. A video of the incident, recorded by bystanders, surfaced on Wednesday, drawing widespread attention.

The incident occurred on Sunday in Bilaspur area, near Mullakheda village, when a five-foot-long cobra was spotted on a roadside, triggering panic among local residents. People avoided the stretch, taking alternative routes, until the snake briefly moved into nearby fields.

According to eyewitnesses, the cobra later returned to the road, where Jiraj Singh, a resident of Pipliya Gopal village, encountered it while passing by. Singh reportedly caught the snake with his bare hands, prompting onlookers to applaud his apparent bravery.

Encouraged by the crowd, Singh began performing dangerous stunts with the cobra. In a video lasting about 1 minute and 22 seconds, he is seen placing the snake around his neck and pressing its hood while making provocative remarks to those gathered. At one point, a scarf was used to tie the snake near his head.

Moments later, the cobra bit Singh on his hand, ear, and neck. Despite the injuries, he managed to reach his village, where his condition rapidly worsened. Family members rushed him to a nearby government hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Meanwhile, villagers secured the cobra in a box and informed forest officials. A team from the Dandia Reserved Forest arrived at the spot and safely released the snake back into the forest.

Confirming the incident, Forest Ranger Amit Kumar said the cobra was rescued without harm and released as per protocol. Kotwali In-Charge Inspector Balwan Singh stated that Singh died due to a snake bite and that the body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Further investigation is underway.

Authorities have once again urged the public to avoid handling wild animals and to immediately alert forest officials in such situations, warning that such acts pose serious risks to both human life and wildlife.
