Social media platform X has acknowledged lapses in complying with Indian law and assured the government that it will operate strictly in accordance with the country’s legal framework, government sources said.
As part of corrective measures, the platform has blocked around 3,500 pieces of content and deleted over 600 accounts following concerns over the circulation of obscene material.
According to official sources, X has also assured authorities that such content will not be permitted on the platform in the future. The company has committed to strengthening its content moderation mechanisms to ensure full compliance with Indian regulations.
The action follows concerns raised by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) over the generation of indecent and sexually explicit content through AI services, including Grok. On January 2, the IT Ministry directed X to immediately remove all vulgar, obscene and unlawful content—particularly material generated via Grok—warning that non-compliance would invite action under the IT Act and other applicable laws.
The ministry also instructed X to submit a detailed Action Taken Report within 72 hours. The report was required to outline the technical and administrative measures adopted in relation to Grok, the extent of oversight exercised by the Chief Compliance Officer, and the action taken against objectionable content, users and accounts. In addition, X was asked to detail the systems established to ensure adherence to mandatory reporting obligations under Indian law.
The ministry noted that Grok AI has been misused not only to create fake profiles but also to harass and target women appearing in images or videos shared online. This includes the use of prompts, image manipulation and the generation of synthetic content to abuse or distort visual material.
On January 8, X submitted a detailed response to the IT Ministry. However, the government described the reply as “detailed but not adequate.”
