Surat (Gujarat): A tragic accident claimed the lives of a couple and their young daughter after a kite string caused their two-wheeler to crash off a flyover in Surat district on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on the Chandrashekhar Azad Flyover, where the family fell from a height of nearly 70 feet.
The man, identified as Rehan, and his 7-year-old daughter, Aisha, died on the spot. His wife, Rehana, initially survived after landing on a parked autorickshaw below the flyover, but succumbed to her injuries on Thursday.
The family had ventured out on a motorcycle to mark Makar Sankranti when the accident occurred. According to Rehana’s statement to the police, a kite string suddenly became entangled around Rehan’s neck while they were riding atop the flyover. As he attempted to remove the string with one hand, he lost control of the motorcycle.
The vehicle crashed into the flyover’s parapet wall, causing all three occupants to be flung off the bridge. Rehan and his daughter died instantly on impact. Rehana, though seriously injured, survived the fall due to landing on an autorickshaw parked beneath the flyover. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
The incident has once again highlighted the grave dangers posed by kite strings, particularly during festival seasons, prompting renewed calls for stricter enforcement and public awareness measures.
