Washington: Union Minister for Railways, Communications and Electronics & Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, participated in the Critical Minerals Ministerial meeting hosted by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday (local time), as global concerns grow over vulnerabilities in strategic mineral supply chains.
The high-level meeting, convened at the United States Treasury, brought together finance ministers and senior representatives from key economies to discuss measures to secure, diversify, and strengthen global supply chains for critical minerals, particularly rare earth elements that are vital for advanced manufacturing and clean energy technologies.
Addressing the gathering, Vaishnaw underscored the importance of resilient supply chains as manufacturing activity expands rapidly, especially in sectors such as electronics. “As manufacturing grows at scale, including electronics manufacturing in India, it is essential for all countries to build resilient and reliable supply chains for critical minerals,” he said, according to news agency ANI.
He noted that participating countries shared experiences and outlined steps being taken to enhance supply chain resilience, with a strong focus on technology for refining and processing mineral ores. Discussions also covered long-term strategies to secure high-quality critical minerals, including rare earth permanent magnets, in a sustainable manner. Funding mechanisms for new projects and frameworks for technology sharing among nations were also key areas of deliberation.
In a post on social media platform X, Secretary Bessent said the meeting reflected a strong, shared determination among nations to urgently address vulnerabilities in critical minerals supply chains. He expressed optimism that countries would pursue “prudent derisking rather than decoupling” and recognise the need for decisive, coordinated action.
The ministerial meeting was attended by finance leaders from Australia, Canada, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Republic of Korea and the United Kingdom, highlighting a broad international consensus on the strategic importance of critical minerals.
According to an official release, the United States outlined steps already taken, as well as planned investments, to develop secure, diversified and resilient critical minerals supply chains. Secretary Bessent also cautioned that existing supply chains remain highly concentrated and vulnerable to disruption and manipulation, urging participating nations to accelerate collaborative efforts toward durable, long-term solutions.
