Washington: In a decisive move aimed at Iran’s economic lifelines, US President Donald Trump has issued a new trade directive imposing sweeping penalties on countries conducting business with Tehran. Under the order, any nation maintaining trade relations with Iran will be subject to a 25 per cent additional tariff on all business transactions with the United States.
The announcement was made through Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social, underscoring a hardline approach amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Order Takes Immediate Effect
“Iran-related trade will no longer be tolerated. Any country that trades with Iran will face a 25 per cent tariff on all business with the United States. This decision is final and takes effect immediately,” Trump stated. However, he did not provide further clarification on enforcement mechanisms or the possibility of exemptions for specific countries.
Political Context and Military Signals
The directive comes at a time of intensified domestic unrest in Iran, with widespread protests continuing against the administration of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Trump claimed that the Iranian leadership had crossed a “red line” and indicated that military options are being actively considered. He also asserted that the United States stands ready to provide any assistance necessary for the “liberation” of Iran.
Diplomatic Channels Remain Open
Despite the heightened rhetoric, Trump suggested that diplomatic engagement remains a possibility. He said Iranian officials have recently approached the United States seeking negotiations, and that plans are underway for potential high-level discussions.
Meanwhile, Iran has strongly rejected Washington’s stance. Ayatollah Khamenei accused the United States of pursuing “deceptive” policies and warned against reliance on “mercenary forces.” Iranian authorities have stated that any threat of aerial or military action is being taken with utmost seriousness.
