Tiruchirappalli: Police in Tamil Nadu have registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against 15 individuals, including close family members of a minor girl, following allegations of prolonged sexual abuse that came to light during an official inquiry.
According to officials, the case relates to a 15-year-old girl from Karur district who had been residing in Puthur, Tiruchirappalli, along with her mother and grandmother. During questioning by child welfare authorities, the minor alleged that she had been subjected to sexual abuse by multiple individuals over a period of time.
The girl reportedly gave birth to a female child on June 14, 2023, at a private hospital. Authorities said the newborn was left at the hospital, after which the girl and her family went into hiding.
On December 23, the Tiruchirappalli District Child Protection and Welfare Committee issued a notice directing the family to appear for questioning. The girl later appeared before the committee along with her mother and grandmother. During the inquiry, she disclosed details of sexual abuse, prompting officials to initiate legal action.
Based on a complaint filed by the District Child Protection Officer, the Srirangam All Women Police Station registered a case under relevant provisions of the POCSO Act. Those named in the case include the girl’s mother, grandmother, and a relative who is reportedly affiliated with a political party, along with others.
Police have arrested the mother, grandmother and the relative for questioning. Investigators have also ordered a DNA test to establish the paternity of the child as part of the ongoing probe.
Authorities said the investigation is at a preliminary stage and further arrests are likely based on evidence gathered. Officials have emphasised that the identity of the minor and the child will be protected in accordance with the law.
