US President Donald Trump has stated that Iran’s leadership has reached out to Washington to initiate negotiations, claiming that sustained pressure from the United States has compelled Tehran to seek dialogue.
Trump said a meeting between the two sides is being arranged, while cautioning that the US may still take action if developments prior to the talks demand an immediate response.
“They called to negotiate. Yesterday, the leaders of Iran called. They want to negotiate. I think they’re tired of being beaten up by the United States,” Trump said. “A meeting is being set up, but we may have to act because of what’s happening before the meeting.”
Earlier, Trump indicated that military options against Iran remain under consideration, particularly in light of reports that protesters have been killed during ongoing anti-government demonstrations in the country.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump was asked whether Iran had crossed a “red line.” He responded by saying that the situation appears to be approaching that threshold. “There seem to be some people killed,” he said, adding that Washington is closely monitoring developments and treating the matter with seriousness.
