Jammu: Security forces on Sunday opened fire and activated counter-drone systems after multiple suspected drone-like objects were detected along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir, defence officials said.
According to officials, a suspected drone was first spotted at around 6:25 pm moving from Tain towards Topa in the Mankote sector of Poonch district. About ten minutes later, another drone-like object was observed near Khabbar village in the Teryath area of Rajouri district. A blinking light was also noticed moving from Dharmsal village in the Kalakote area towards Bharakh.
At approximately 7:15 pm, a third suspected drone with a blinking light was seen hovering briefly over Chak Babral village in the Ramgarh sector of Samba district.
Security forces immediately deployed Counter-Unmanned Aerial System (Counter-UAS) measures, following which the suspected aerial objects were seen retreating towards the other side of the border. Search operations are currently underway in all affected areas to rule out any security threat on the ground.
Earlier in the day, a massive search operation was launched in the Kanachak area near the International Border after intelligence agencies intercepted a satellite phone communication believed to be linked to suspected terrorists. Officials said the intercepted communication was traced to a satellite device.
The joint operation involved the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Border Security Force (BSF), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the Army. Kanachak, located barely one kilometre from the International Border on the outskirts of Jammu, has previously been identified as a vulnerable infiltration route.
Authorities said the entire area has been cordoned off and search operations have been intensified across Jammu, including high-altitude regions, amid inputs suggesting that nearly three dozen terrorists may be active in the region.
